Choosing the Right Test

Overlapping services explained

Fatigue vs. Structural Testing

When to choose which

Fatigue testing determines material-level endurance limits (S-N curves, da/dN). Structural testing validates full components or assemblies under simulated service loads. Choose fatigue for material qualification, structural for product sign-off.

Corrosion vs. Environmental Testing

When to choose which

Corrosion testing targets material resistance to specific chemical environments (SSC, HIC, IGC). Environmental testing simulates weathering, thermal cycling, and humidity exposure for product qualification. Choose corrosion for material selection, environmental for product durability.

Metallography vs. SEM/EBSD

When to choose which

Optical metallography covers microstructure, grain size, inclusion rating, and phase identification at macro/micro scale. SEM/EBSD provides sub-micron imaging, elemental analysis (EDS), and crystallographic orientation. Start with metallography; escalate to SEM when fracture origin, contamination, or texture analysis is needed.

Product Validation vs. Weld Qualification

When to choose which

Product validation covers full DV/PV/PPAP programs for manufactured components. Weld qualification specifically qualifies welding procedures and welders per code requirements (ASME IX, AWS, ISO 15614). Choose weld qualification for fabrication compliance, product validation for manufactured goods.
