Sampling & Preservation Guidance
- Sample containers: Use laboratory-supplied or certified clean containers. Plastic (HDPE) for general chemistry, glass (amber) for organics, sterile bottles for microbiology.
- Preservation: Acidify metal samples (HNO₃ to pH <2), refrigerate biological samples (4 °C), add sodium thiosulfate for chlorinated water microbiology samples.
- Holding times: Microbiology within 6 hours, BOD within 24 hours, metals within 6 months (preserved). Label all containers with date, time, location, and sampler name.
- Chain of custody: Sample custody forms available on request. Required for regulatory submissions and dispute investigations.
